Neil Sebbey - Web and Software Developer

Hello! I'm Neil Sebbey. 👋

A software developer specialising in building web and desktop applications, with a background in IT operations and cloud infrastructure.

Welcome to my portfolio! As someone who believes in lifelong learning, I'm committed to discover emerging trends in the world of technology, and transform creative ideas into innovative solutions by leveraging my expertise in software development, web technologies, DevOps, cloud infrastructure and system administration.

This portfolio website is home to web and software development projects completed during my studies as a Computing student at MTU - Kerry Campus and my spare time outside of work, of which each project will also contain a link to either a demo web app or a GitHub repository - from the past to the present and to the future.

About Me

Portrait Photo

I'm a Class of 2023 graduate from Munster Technological University (MTU), holding a degree in Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computing with Software Development. I'm passionate about building technology that solves real-world problems and help end-users navigate user interfaces intuitively, whether it is a desktop application or a cloud-native system.

My skill set consists of cloud technologies, web and desktop application development, I enjoy jumping into hands-on projects where I can build useful solutions and learn something new in the process. During my academic years at Kerry College and MTU Kerry, I completed work placements (internships) with Fexco and WAZP, where I worked on pragmatic, production-level tools. I also have experience with systems administration, where I wrote Bash scripts across Unix-based platforms, including Linux and macOS, and set up enterprise LAN network configurations.

Experience

Throughout my career and studies, I've worked on a wide range of projects, from straightforward web and desktop apps to enterprise-level, cloud-native systems. My stack has included front-end interfaces built with Windows Forms and Flask, and back-end services powered by Oracle, MySQL or PostgreSQL databases with full Create, Read, Update and Delete (CRUD) functionality required by each application project.

I also currently freelance in QA testing through platforms like Applause / uTest. That work involves testing mobile apps, websites, hardware and complex platforms for clients in multiple industries, including Fintech, KYC (Know Your Customer) solutions, entertainment, consumer electronics and e-commerce. My QA testing focus has been to identify potential issues early and help global teams ship polished end-user products and services.

Recently, I've also been experimenting with Tailwind CSS and daisyUI integration into custom WordPress themes. While this work is still in the exploration stage and not yet ready to showcase as a finished project, it reflects my interest in bridging modern utility-first styling frameworks with traditional CMS-driven development.

About this website

This portfolio website is built with Flask, a lightweight Python-based web framework, and powered by a PostgreSQL database that organises the technologies that I have used, and projects I have worked on. Instead of being a static site, it pulls live data from the database to keep everything dynamic and easy to update.

If you're curious about the behind-the-scenes process, here is a detailed video of how this site fetches data from a PostgreSQL database.

Projects

Here are my software and web development projects I have completed during my academic journey, as well as during my spare time.

The Phone Shop
Coursework
Web App

A Flask-based web application for managing inventory of items aimed at e-commerce merchants, it is based on the theme of a mobile phone store. This project demonstrates how the inventory of items, including mobile phones, can be managed effectively.

Dreamovie Movie Rental
Coursework
Desktop App

A C#-based Windows Forms application demonstrating the functionality of a movie rental software system and the business operations of a movie rental establishment called Dreamovie (fictional name for the purposes of the assessment). An Oracle database powers every CRUD transaction of the movie rental application.

Mobile Plan Finder
Coursework
Desktop App

This is a mini-project to demonstrate how desktop GUI applications can be written in Java using the Swing API in the form of a mobile plan finder. This application helps users of mobile phones find the best mobile plan for their needs based on their budget, whether they are looking for an unlimited 5G-enabled (fastest at the time of completing the assessment) data plan or a value for money plan that includes sufficient amount of texts or minutes of calls.

Greenhouse Fitness
Coursework
Web App

A demo web application demonstrating how a business, more particularly a fitness centre or gym, can use the MEAN stack, consisting of MongoDB, Express, Angular and Node.js frameworks, to build simplified and modern web applications to showcase the business and their offerings.
